Sugar Skull Decoration Contest
Location/Organizer: Brazoria County Library System branches
Date: August 15th – September 15th
Description: Each library branch will advertise and provide blank templates for decorating a paper sugar skull. This is a take-home craft; instructions will be on the back of the sheet. Each branch will choose a few winning sugar skulls which will be highlighted at the Brazoria County Historical Museum (100 East Cedar, Angleton, TX 77515) “Dia de los Muertos” exhibit and displayed with the other submissions.
Dia de Muertos School Showcase

In celebration of Dia de los Muertos: A Month of Remembrance the Brazoria County Historical Museum will host a student art competition for Angleton Junior High and Angleton High School art students. The top ten works selected for each grade will be displayed at the Museum October 21 – November 15, 2024. Merit awards will be given to Best in Show, as well as first and second place for each grade level. A student reception will be held at the Museum on Friday, October 25th at 6pm.

Honoring the Ancestors: Death and Mourning Among Indigenous Peoples of the Texas Gulf Coast

Discover the diverse and rich end-of-life customs and mortuary practices of the Indigenous peoples of coastal Texas in our new exhibit! Learn about how these practices highlight a great respect for the dead and a belief in the continuation of the spirit. Come explore these fascinating cultural heritages!
Los Vivos y Los Muertos: Art Competition
Location: The Center for the Arts & Sciences and Hosted by Brazosport Fine Arts Council
Date: October 8 – November 3
Description: Los Vivos y Los Muertos is a juried exhibition featuring art that explores and honors the cultures, heritage, traditions and rich history of Mexico and the southwest United States with a concentration on work inspired by Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).
Emerging and established artists (ages 16 and above) are invited to submit images of completed work for consideration.
A Best in Show prize of $1,000 will be awarded to a single piece. A single “runner up” prize of $300 will also be awarded.
This juried exhibition will be held at The Center for the Arts & Sciences and hosted by Brazosport Fine Arts Council. The exhibit will run from October 8 – November 3, 2024.

Description: Explore the union of Indigenous and Catholic practices culminating into a vibrant and bountiful holiday that celebrates the cycle of life and death. Tour featured works of art from local student artists celebrating the culture. Take part in the exhibit by honoring your deceased loved ones by adding a photo, memento, or silk flowers to the community ofrenda, or altar.
Land Acknowledgement Ceremony
Jackson Plantation Historic Site, 1030 FM 2004, Lake Jackson, TX

Join us as we honor the role of the Karankawa Native Americans in the history of Lake Jackson. Through archaeological research, we have found evidence of Karankawa life on the land that is currently the Jackson Plantation Historic Site. During this ceremony we will acknowledge that the land belonged to the Karankawa and hear from Alex Perez, member of the Karankawa-Kadla community. He will perform a blessing ceremony, an inclusive ceremony in which everyone in attendance is welcome to participate.

Brazosport Fine Arts Council, Lake Jackson Historical Association, Freeport Historical Museum, Freeport Main Street, Brazoria County Historical Museum, Brazoria County Library System and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Brazoria County, are collaborating this fall to honor Hispanic & Latino culture with a monthlong, county-wide celebration of Dia de los Muertos throughout October and early November 2024.
A reception and awards presentation for artists accepted into the exhibition and their guests will be held on Saturday, October 26 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM.
